1995 to 1996: Life after Elections
On Friday the 17th of February of 1995, Nelson Mandela gave his 2nd State of the Nation Address, in Cape Town at the National Assembly Parliament Building.
On Friday the 9th of February of 1996, Nelson Mandela gave his 3rd State of the Nation Address, in Cape Town at the National Assembly Parliament Building.
He appreciated how their National Rugby Team called the Springboks, won their 1st Rugby World Cup on 24th of June in 1995 at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, which was hosted in South Africa.
He also appreciated the South African national Team called Bafana Bafana, which won their 1st African Cup of Nations on the 3rd of February 1996 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
President Mandela also praised the Orlando Pirates Football Club, for winning the Countries 1st ever African Club CAF Champions League Cup, that puts a golden Star on this Club’s Team Jersey.
On Tuesday 19 March 1996, Nelson & Winnie Mandela’s marriage Divorce was officially finalised.
1996 to 1999: Life after Elections
In January of 1997 the Democratic Parliament of South Africa agreed to turn Robben Island into a South African National Heritage Site.
From January of 1997 Robben Island was under the Responsibility of the then Dept. of Arts, Culture, Science & Technology aimed to convert it into a Museum that is open to all people of all Races worldwide.
On Wednesday the 24th of September in 1997, The Robben Island was officially opened by Nelson Mandela as a National Museum and also as a National Heritage Site.
On Tuesday the 13th of February 1996, President Nelson Mandela welcomed the Establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) & congratulated the Chairperson & all appointed members.
The 1st Hearing took place at around the 15th of April in 1996.
The Chairperson of the TRC was Archbishop Desmond Tutu & the Deputy Chairperson was Alex Boraine
The TRC focused on crimes against humanity that took place during the Apartheid Government from the year 1960 until 1994.
1960 was a year in which Robert Sobukwe was arrested for a Crime that internationally speaking was a Human Rights Abuse and it is the same year in which the Sharpeville Massacre also took place in.
One of the Last recognized findings of the commission was filed in the year 2003, making the TRC to have lasted in operation for a period of about 9 years.
1994 being the year on which the Apartheid government system ended after a new Democratic Government was voted into power during the 27 of April 1994 National General Democratic Elections.
About 20 000 people appeared at TRC to share painful events of what happened between 1960 & 1994.
On 18 July 1998, during his 80th Birthday, Nelson Mandela married Graca Machel & made her to become his 3rd Wife.
Graca Machel was 52 years old when Nelson married her & she was going to be turning 53 years on the 17th of October in 1998, her date of birth
is 17th of October in 1945.
Nelson Mandela was Graca Machel’s 2nd Husband.
Her 1st Husband was Samora Machel, who was the President of Mozambique, when he passed away in a plane Crash on Sunday 19th of October in 1986, he was 53 years old when he passed away.
Her 1st Husband Samora Machel passed away the day after, Graca had just celebrated her 41st birthday.
On Friday the 18th of September in 1998, the Harvard University Presented & Honoured Nelson with a Honorary Doctors Law Degree, joining Winston Churchill of England & George Washington of USA.
On Thursday the 29th of October in 1998, Nelson Mandela who was the then President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, was made available to receive
the Report from the TRC.
On Friday the 26th of March in 1999, President Nelson Mandela gave his last Speech at the National Assembly Buildings.
On Wednesday the 2nd of June in 1999, the President Nelson Mandela voted in the Johannesburg Area during the 2nd Democratic Elections of South Africa.
On Wednesday the 16th of June in 1999, Nelson Mandela handed over his Presidency to Thabo Mbeki who was elected & took his Oath of Office in Pretoria as New President of a Democratic South Africa.
2000 to 2013: Last years of Nelson Mandela’s Life
In 2004 Nelson Mandela presented himself at the FIFA world Cup, Host Country revealing Event, his Presence there encouraged Voters to Select South Africa to be the Host of the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
On Friday 30 April 2004, Nelson Mandela’s 1st Wife Evelyn Mase, Died at the age of 81 years.
During this time their Son Makgatho Mandela was getting more ill by the day.
On Thursday 06 January 2005, their Son Makgatho Mandela, Died at the age of 54 years.
Nelson Mandela revealed that his son Makgatho Mandela, was HIV Positive and had passed away due to an HIV and AIDS related illness.
This was during a Period that Nelson Mandela supported the Fight against HIV and AIDS and went on campaigns and Fund raising events that were focusing on the awareness Campaign against this illnesses.
On Saturday 20 October 2007, South Africa won their 2nd Rugby World Cup, winning Score 15-6 against England the Rugby National Team the Springboks were inspired by what it is Called the Madiba Magic.
Nelson Mandela was proud to see that the Springboks won their 2nd World Cup using his Madiba Magic, which is using their South African Spirit of Unifying the Nation through winning Medals in Sports.
On 18 July 2008 during his 90th Birthday, Nelson & his 3rd Wife Graca, also celebrated their 10 year marriage anniversary.
During the 2010 Soccer World Cup, that was hosted in South Africa, Nelson & his Wife Graca were driven inside the Stadium before a Soccer match & he was happy to see a Sports event uniting his people again.
He was happy that he was able to convince FIFA Countries to elect South Africa to host this Soccer World Cup Event that also brought new Roads, Trains, Stadiums Infrastructure improvements in his Country.
Nelson saw about 80 000 Soccer Fans screaming & waving to him until he could no longer wave back at them with his old hand as it was getting tired faster that it used to wave, when he was released from Prison.
During 2013 Nelson Mandela’s Health was declining, coupled with old age, His Family, Close Friends, the doctors and the South African Nation
were there to encourage him to get well.
On Thursday, the 5th of December in 2013, Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95 years.
Nelson Mandela passed away in this Home at the Houghton Estate in Johannesburg and his death was announced on National TV & National Radio Stations.
The government arranged for Nelson Mandela to be given a State Funeral.
On Tuesday 10 December in 2013, the Memorial Service of Nelson Mandela, was held at the FNB Soccer City Stadium near Soweto in Johannesburg.
On Wednesday the 11th & Thursday the 12th of December 2013, Nelson Mandela’s body was laid at state at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Any South African was permitted to go to the Union Buildings to go to view Nelson Mandela’s body before he could be officially buried.
On Sunday the 15th of December in 2013, Nelson Mandela’s Funeral took place as he was buried in Qunu, his Home Village in the Eastern Cape.
